Measuring abatement from approved projects

Emission/Abatement Study

To be eligible for Greenhouse Friendly™ approval, abatement providers must prove that their projects generate abatement that is beyond or additional to "business as usual". Preparing an Emission/Abatement Study for your project enables you to calculate the level of abatement that can be achieved by the project.

A Greenhouse Friendly™ Emission/Abatement Study should include:

  1. Baseline emissions inventory - you need to be able to identify the project boundary, emission sources, expected activity levels and appropriate emission factors. The AGO Factors and Methods Workbook is the first port of call to identify current emission factors. If emission factors are not available in the Workbook then other emission factors may be used subject to approval from the Australian Greenhouse Office.
  2. "Business-as-usual" forecast - this is done by multiplying the baseline emissions factors by the expected activity.
  3. Project emissions forecast - you determine the total emissions for the project based on estimates of direct, indirect and project construction emissions.
  4. Forecast abatement - you calculate the expected abatement for each year of the five-year approval period by subtracting the project emissions from the "business-as-usual" baseline emissions.
  5. Risks - there needs to be an identification of any significant risks that could affect the estimate and achievement of abatement, and development of a risk management plan to mitigate these risks.
