Introduction
Greenhouse Friendly™ is part of the Australian Government's Greenhouse Challenge Plus Programme. Greenhouse Challenge Plus™ is a voluntary industry partnership programme that aims to:
- reduce greenhouse gas emissins
- accelerate the uptake of energy efficiency
- integrate greenhouse issues into business decision-making; and
- provide more consistent reporting on gas emissions levels.
Greenhouse Challenge Plus™ is managed by the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO) as part of the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Heritage.
Greenhouse Friendly™ aims to help meet the challenge of climate change by:
- providing businesses and consumers the opportunity to sell and purchase greenhouse-neutral products and services;
- broadening the basis for investment in greenhouse gas abatement; and
- engaging business and consumers on climate change issues.
Through Greenhouse Friendly™, Australian businesses can market greenhouse-neutral products or services, deliver greenhouse gas abatement and give Australian consumers greater purchasing choice.
The process to apply for Greenhouse Friendly™ product and service certification is described in Part One of these Guidelines.
Consumers can use the Greenhouse Friendly™ logo to make environmentally responsible purchasing decisions. Under a rigorous certifi cation process, the ‘cradle-to-grave’ greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production, use and disposal of products or services are fully offset by approved Greenhouse Friendly™ abatement. Certified products and services are eligible to be labelled with the Greenhouse Friendly™ logo. Consumer confi dence is provided through an objective independent verification process that underpins Greenhouse Friendly™ certification.
Greenhouse Challenge Plus™ members who purchase Greenhouse Friendly™ certified products and services can list these products and services as having zero emissions in their Greenhouse Challenge Plus™ emissions inventories.
Greenhouse Friendly™ product and service certifi cation creates the demand for abatement from Greenhouse Friendly™ approved abatement projects. Greenhouse Friendly™ abatement projects must generate additional, permanent and verifi able greenhouse gas emissions reductions or sequestration.
The process for gaining Greenhouse Friendly™ approval for an abatement project is set out in Part Two of these Guidelines.
Greenhouse Friendly™ approved abatement can be used by:
- Greenhouse Friendly™ product and service providers to offset the emissions associated with their certified product or service; and
- Greenhouse Challenge Plus™ members as an offset in their Greenhouse Challenge Plus™ emissions inventories or to meet greenhouse goals as Greenhouse Challenge Plus™ Leaders.
Greenhouse Friendly™ approved abatement can also be sold outside the Greenhouse Challenge Plus™ framework.
Greenhouse Friendly™ approved abatement can only be used once. Once an identifi ed quantity of abatement is used under the Greenhouse Challenge Plus™ programme (e.g. as an offset for Greenhouse Friendly™ certified products and services, or to meet a quantifi able greenhouse goal as a Greenhouse Challenge Plus™ Leader) it must be retired and cannot be reused for any other offset or emissions credits scheme. Similarly, if a quantity of abatement has been declared or used in another scheme or for another purpose, it cannot be reused in Greenhouse Challenge Plus™.
