What are Greenhouse Friendly™ abatement projects?
Greenhouse Friendly abatement projects have to occur within Australia and must generate greenhouse gas emission reductions or sequestration that are:
- additional (that is, “beyond business-as-usual”);
- permanent; and
- verifiable.
Additional abatement projects are generally associated with an investment or behaviour change not normally undertaken as part of the organisation’s established operating practices, or under existing internal investment requirements.
Examples of the types of abatement activities which may be approved under Greenhouse Friendly include energy efficiency measures, waste diversion and recycling, capture and flaring of land fill gas and fugitive emissions such as coal mine gas, generation of renewable energy, and tree planting and avoided deforestation projects.
