Australian Methodology for the Estimation of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks 2005: States and Territories

Australian Greenhouse Office, Department of the Environment and Water Resources, March 2007

State Methodology

The State and Territory inventories cover the major direct greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and the indirect greenhouse gases, carbon monoxide (CO), oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and non methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC). It also includes sulphur dioxide (SO2), which also influences global warming.

For the purpose of compiling the State and Territory inventories, source and sink categories are grouped under the same six sectors as for the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory, as defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). These represent the main human activities that contribute to the release or capture of greenhouse gases into or from the atmosphere.

State and Territory inventories are developed using the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory methodology and are compiled using data collected for the Inventory.

The state methodology is based on the Australian Methodology for the Estimation of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks series. The state methodology is an additional title in the series.
