Australia’s National Carbon Accounting System is a world-leading system to account for greenhouse gas emissions from land-based sectors

Carbon sink forests are important in reducing Australia's greenhouse gas emissions

Land systems

The land sector is characterised by a vast array of different production systems and ecosystems that together contribute around 27 per cent of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions.

Agricultural activities such as livestock production, cropping and grazing, and forestry operations such as harvesting and fire management produce emissions, while forests also provide an important greenhouse sink.

A comprehensive national approach to reduce greenhouse gas emissions needs to take the land sector into account.
