Purpose of this booklet

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is an important part of actions taken by businesses to improve environmental performance. Planting trees or investing in forest sink emission offsets can be an effective way to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, while potentially contributing to Australia’s other environmental and economic goals.

This booklet shows how businesses can include forest sinks in their greenhouse gas abatement strategies. It focuses on establishing new forests to sequester carbon and provides information on:

how trees can contribute to greenhouse emissions abatement;
forest sink activities that will contribute to Australia’s greenhouse gas abatement effort;
forest sink opportunities available to industry;
issues to consider before investing in forest sinks to offset emissions; and
how quantities of carbon sequestered in forests are estimated.
