Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
- School education programs on the greenhouse effect and household energy efficiency - includes giveaways of compact fluorescent light globes.
- Community education programs on household energy efficiency - includes giveaways of compact fluorescent light globes, compost bins/worm farms, window and door sealers etc.
- Council also funds a small grants program for small-scale energy efficiency works, and teaching aids.
Travel
- Successfully encouraged the uptake of fuel-efficient cylinder passenger vehicles in Council's fleet through lease back price incentives.
- Run community education programs to encourage public trasnport use and fuel efficient vehicles.
- The fleet is now dominated by 4 cylinder vehicles and vehicles powered by LPG or light-diesel technology.
- Biodiesel has been used in the waste collection fleet and other plant and heavy transport applications.
Corporate
- Implementation of 17 energy efficiency projects in Council owned facilities which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 1768 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per annum.
- Purchased 10 per cent greenpower for street lighting and 50 per cent greenpower for Council's administration centre saving a further 1232 tonnes per annum.
- Invoved in the SSROC street lighting improvement program and currently energy efficient street lights are being trialled in some streets of Bankstown.
Future greenhouse abatement actions
- Continue to implement energy efficiency projects in Council buildings and amenities, purchase greenpower and reduce emissions from Council's fleet.
- We hope to extend our community education programs in the future to achieve additional savings in the residential sector.
