Mosman Council
Mosman is proud to be one of the first Councils in NSW to achieve the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Australia program milestones. The program has provided assistance and support to Council in the planning and implementation of actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Over the coming years Council will be focusing on reducing corporate greenhouse gas emissions and will work more closely with the community to achieve reduction targets. We look forward to continuing our participation in the CCP program.
A word from the Mayor
Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
- Programs implemented to reduce greenhouse gas emissions include the Ecological Footprint Project which worked directly with six households to implement measures/behaviours, the Energy Efficient Schools Program, and a community giveaway of climate packs in partnership with Easy Being Green.
- Council is involved in the Fridge Buyback Program (saving 208t of CO2 and recycling 1,800 kg of metal in 2006).
- Council is undertaking community education via the local media, is showing a free public screening of An Inconvenient Truth in March, and is supporting the Earthy Hour Initiative and encouraging Mosman households/business/schools to participate.
Travel
- Council has developed a bike plan and has improved cycling and walking tracks.
- Implementation of a staff education campaign to raise awareness of the benefits of using sustainable transport options such as public transport, cycling or walking to and from work.
- Council is participating in the CCP Sustainable Transport Project, and will be developing and implementing a Sustainable Transport Action Plan.
Corporate
- Council's Environmental Management Plan directs Council's environmental actions, including actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Council has undertaken an energy audit, uses energy efficient computer LCD screens, has improved the air conditioning system in the library, and recycles green waste for top dressing on Council ovals.
- Council is participating in the CCP Greenhouse Purchasing Program, and has developed and is implementing its Greenhouse and Sustainable Purchasing Action Plan.
- From this Plan Council has increased its percentage of GreenPower, purchased 100% recycled paper for office use and recycled content envelopes, is participating in an energy efficient street lighting program, and is implementing a staff education program on saving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the office.
- Council is also a member of the Sustainable Choice Program.
Future greenhouse abatement actions
- Council will continue to implement the Greenhouse and Sustainable Purchasing Action Plan including the development of Council wide specifications for printing/copying jobs, the replacement of disposable items such as cups/plates with sustainable products and installing energy efficient lighting in Council buildings.
- Council will also be committed to implementing actions to be identified in the Sustainable Transport Action Plan, including a review of Council's fleet management.
- Council is also hoping to run a series of sustainability workshops in partnership with the community/businesses/organisations.
