Murweh Shire Council
The Murweh Shire Council joined the Cities for Climate Protection in 2001. In that time, and with great support from the CCP Australia Team, Council has achieved Milestone 4 status and greatly increased community awareness of issues relating to CO2 emissions. This program has been the catalyst for Council to formulate strategies on other conservation and protection issues relating to our natural resources, which include the Save the Bilby Campaign, the promotion of pollution free skies in the Charleville Cosmos Centre marketing campaigns and the efficient management of our finite water resources.
A word from the Mayor
Actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Community
Council links the CCP program with the environmental and conservation awareness campaigns currently profiled within the shire. These include:- Save the Bilby campaign
- Promotion of the clearest and non polluted skies in the southern hemisphere
- Water efficiency campaign brochures.
Travel
- Shire CO2 emissions awareness and measures taken to reduce quantity
- Regular promotion at inter agency meetings, local radio interview spots and exchange of information with neighbouring shire Councils.
Corporate
- Measures engaged so far by Council include;
- Milestone 1 audit of Murweh shire emissions
- Engagement of electrical engineer to conduct an audit of shire consumption and recommendations for efficiencies
- Installation of sky light roofing to reduce dependancy on electric lighting during the day at the Council depot and stores
- Purchase of pool cover for the Charleville Pool (50metres x 6 lanes)
- Switching off of two cold rooms at showgrounds which were operating 24 hours a day regardless of usage
- Purchase of pool cover for Morven swimming pool (25 metre x 6 lanes).
Future greenhouse abatement actions
- Currently working on plans to treat effluent for the irrigation of Shire parks and sporting ovals. If successful, it is hoped that 2 town bores will be decommissioned saving high usage of electricity necessary for the pumps.
