Land use and management

Overview

Land use and management practices, combined with the nature of the soil and climate, affect soil carbon levels after deforestation.

Implementation

An important aspect of understanding emissions was the development of a national understanding of agricultural land management over the past 30 years. Regions were delineated on the basis of biogeography and soil type. For each region affected by land clearing, crop type and management regime were documented from available sources, building a 30-year history of management practices (eg. stubble burning) for each land use (eg. wheat, sugar cane etc.) by soil type (eg. podsol, clay etc.) A total of 141 different grazing and cropping systems were identified and described.

Analysis and integration

Land use and management data are used within the FullCAM modelling framework to provide a 30-year dynamic perspective on the nature and extent of change in land systems across the continent over the period since 1970.
