Australia's National Carbon Accounting System provides a complete accounting capability for sources and sinks of greenhouse gases from Australian land based systems. The system underpins National Greenhouse Gas Inventory reporting, and provides a basis for emissions projections to assess progress towards meeting Australia's emissions reduction target.
Land based sources and sinks form a major part of Australia's emissions profile - around 30% of Australia's human - induced greenhouse gas emissions come from activities like cropping, grazing, land clearing and forestry. Accurate data are needed to underpin policies for greenhouse and natural resource management.
