Abstract

Land Use Change emissions constitute a significant component of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions profile. This report draws on the resource inventories, field studies, modelling and extensive multi-temporal remote sensing methods developed and assembled by the NCAS program to estimate Australia's Land Use Change emissions from 1988-2001.

The report summaries CO₂-equivalent emissions for Land Use Change on a National and on an Australian State and Territory basis, with total emissions from all carbon pools (below- and above-ground biomass, soil carbon and litter) from 1988-2001 accounted for. Annual rates of forest conversion and reclearing are presented for each State and Territory, along with a breakdown of the CO₂ emissions from Land Use Change by soil type and vegetation type.
