The project reported here is one of a suite of projects designed for the purpose of carrying out a nationwide estimation in Australia of changes in soil carbon following changes in land use.
The main purpose of this project is to improve the value in Australia's National Greenhouse Gas Inventory for emissions of carbon dioxide from soil carbon following land use change for the 1990 baseline year. An additional task is to make an estimate of the emissions that have occurred between 1991 and 2000.
The approach used in this project is based on modelling changes in different soils in different locations under a range of management systems using a calibrated and verified soil carbon model. The approach makes the maximum use of existing information and allows estimates to be made for areas where little or no soil data exist.
