Hydroelectric power is electricity produced by the potential energy of fresh water in rivers and lakes. Hydroelectricity accounts for a significant percentage of Australia's existing electricity generation capacity and has the advantage of being able to provide both base load and peaking capacity to the electricity network. Small-scale hydro using the run of the river approach instead of constructing large dams has fewer environmental impacts.
