International greenhouse science
International greenhouse science is coordinated across programmes such as;
- World Climate Research Programme
- International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme
- International Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assesses international greenhouse science and provides advice to the United Nations Framework Convention on Change.
The IPCC assesses the scientific, technical and socio-economic information needed to understand the risk of human-induced climate change.
In 2001, IPCC completed its third comprehensive assessment in 10 years on the state of knowledge about the global climate. This Third Assessment Report involved several hundred internationally recognised expert authors. The report provides an open and transparent process with scope for scientific and government review.
The Fourth Assessment Report projects an increase of between 1.1 and 6.4°C in the globally averaged surface temperature over the period 1990 to 2100. About half of the uncertainty in this projection arises from uncertainty about future greenhouse gas emissions and about half from uncertainties in global climate models.
